For now, I want to talk about the operating system. Claudio, David Mulder, andGreg all suggested gOS would be a good option. I tried it out myself, and played with Ubuntu Netbook Remix, KDE 4, and a few others as well. At the end of the day,gOS was clearly the best flavour of linux for the Kogan netbook.
We ended up choosing gOS because it's fast, easy to use, stable, and has a fantastic, intuitive interface. Here's a screenshot of gOS running a few gadgets:
