NEC announced last week that they would be exiting the consumer electronics market in Australia. They join Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Philips who have also recently departed.
This obviously points to the problems with traditional retail models, and the trouble they are having during this economic crisis.
Not only have we been left with on a small number of big-name brands left making TVs in Australia, but they are raising their prices!
On top of that, some companies have been caught out for price fixing.
Everyone is clearly looking online to get the best deal. When times are tough, every dollar counts. In 2009 Kogan will continue to deliver on our promise to offer the best technology at affordable prices. While everyone is raising prices, we’ll be either maintaining or lowering them.
For example, we recently dropped:
· 47" LCD from $1899 to $1699
· Blu-ray player from $349 to $249
· 42" LCD will soon drop from $1499 to $1299

Good to see! This needed to happen to follow your business model of cutting out the "middle man". Recently I was looking for Blu-ray players and your products weren't looking so competitive, but with your new reduction in price I guess there is nothing left to do but place my order :) Cheers!

Yeah, good on you - I dismissed your ebay ads last year but became more interested after reading the write-up in one of my computer magazines. As a nerd I tend to buy from the MSYs and Game-dudes rather than the big retailers because I know what I want and need no support as such. I will consider one of your 32" 1920x1080 panels in the future when some feedback becomes available. I applaud your attitude mate and while there will always be a need for the big mobs where the average monkey can compare products and get that warm, fuzzy retail experience while paying way too much, I am sure that if you can keep the quality and RMA experience good you will go well.
Can I suggest looking at 1080p projectors also? They are massively overpriced right now and I know I would consider one with decent specs for around the $1000 mark.
cheers, John

In reference to James,
This is the nature of the cut price online beast!
Buy now at $X and who knows how much it is going to be tomorrow!
It does seem unfair that Kogan's prices are so erratic.... on e-bay his prices @ buy now are far higher then what he sells them for on this web site, obviously to entice the buyer to fork out more money in the actions.
These actions are misleading and I wonder if they are even legal?
At the end of the day its all about the perception of how much these products are really worth?!?!?!

JA p, You forget that Ebay takes coms hence the need for a higher price. Im a little disapointed with the cost of the 19inch screen tho. I can pick up a Samsung lcd with stereo sound for about 199$ at my cut price computer store... Kogan has usually had the best prices. OH well.
Must report tho the 42inch LCD I purchased last year (over 6 months ago now) is working beautifully, Ive had zero issues, the swivel stand has come in handy too many times to count and I still haven't seen a screen that big with 1080p at a better price. Cheers Mate keep up the good work.
BTW A Smith I purchased a Bluray Player/DVD Burner for My PC for only 109$ Considering my PC and Nvidia Card produce a better image than any standalone device could ever hope to cope with and that the computer leads to far more options and functionality I feel it would still be silly to purchase a stand alone Bluray player. Everyone should get an entertainment PC, You can have one built for you for under 700$ if you know the right shops and the output on the kogan 42inch is FLAWLESS. Maybe Kogan will sell them one day.

Come on JAp and James, settle down. You can't say that X is "really" worth $Y, the only question is whether you are willing to exchange $Y for X at any given point in time. If you see a price for something and like that price enough to make the choice to buy it, that's up to you and no-one forced you into anything. There's nothing illegal here at all.
If you regret seeing that thing cheaper somewhere else, then maybe you can learn to do more research before buying (though remember, time is money too for many people who are thus willing to not get the absolute cheapest possible price). Don't blame retailers for that, you have to take responsbility for yourself and your own choices.
Sorry for the rant guys, my two cents over.

I've noticed that the big TV's use LG panels. LG have recently announced 52" and 55" panels. Are there plans to use these in new models?

What happened to the Blu-Ray ver 1.1? The one with the cool blue glowy thing at the front. As I have no need for BR2 for live download, I'd be more than happy to puchase it at the "last years model" price. This new one looks, bland, unoriginal and normal. I liked the cool blue glowy thing. Bring back the cool blue glowy thing.

Kogan can lower their prices because the profits on these no-name Chinese brand items are HUGE.
How do the Chinese Co's make them so cheap? Kogan's 'supply partners' use child labour and polluting the environment. And unlike you, the Australian employee Chinese workers work 12+ hours a day, 7-days a week for around $2 a day. No holidays, sick leave or weekends and are required to live in dormatories in the grounds of the factory (the company takes most of the wages for accomodation).

The money that you 'save' on a cheap DVD player maybe costing a 7y.o. girl her chance of getting an education or the death of a river system. How clear is your conscience?
