As reported by Sydney Morning Herald and The Age (as well as Gizmodo, SmartCompany, and others), we're going to have a Kogan Google Android phone available by Christmas.
And the kicker is, it'll be $199!
I still don't have a name for this product, so if you have any suggestions, I'm keen to hear them!
I'll release more details regarding the specs and design as soon as I can confirm everything, so stay tuned.

Surely K-phone would be a good name?
K-1 ?
After iphone and G1 K is the next step forward.

MiPhone or MiFone would be good name, I will be definitely looking forward to hearing more. So I don't mind what it is called. Will it work on Next G? If so I need 5 for my business.

Oh nice. I only left a comment on another one of your posts the other day, glad to see this confirmation.
Sorry I have no real name suggestions. KoPho/Kandroid/Kookle.. No idea. I'm terrible with names...
Probably have to see design first. It depends where you want to go. K-Phone or K-1 would be ok if you are trying to follow in others footsteps.. depends if you want to go somewhere new.
You have officially put a hold on my next mobile purchase until Christmas. Hope my current one lasts the distance.
Looking forward to seeing specs.

@Daz: with respect, 'Koroid' sounds like a topical ointment for hemorrhoids.
I think KPhone or K1 is a good name as the 1st commenter suggested.
I also posted on another thread about this. Glad to see it is semi-confirmed.
This has delayed my next phone purchase. If you guys can actually release a decent product for AU$200 they'll sell like crazy. Any idea of what basic specs it would have? aGPS, etc?
Want.

Kogan Shadow <--the first one that came to mind
Kogan Aperto (Aperto is Italian for open, as in open source)
Kogan Toccare (Italian for Touch)
Personally I think you should steer clear of the model number names (I.e. KU990) as this means nothing to consumers.
But as Mik said it does depend on the design of the phone and how you see this venture, are you creating a phone brand (I.e. Blackberry where RIM is the maker or iPhone were Apple is the maker) or is Kogan the brand.
Also I wouldn't go with K1 or kPhone as these just make the phone seem like a rip off.
Really looking forward to getting more information about this.

have to agree with Macca and steer clear of any name close to haemorrhoid. Nothing like releasing a new product that might have a small bug on it and the media just has a field day on it.
K-1 seems logical but too similar to other product names especially if this is a great or to be a very successful product you need something unique.
KoG1, Ko-G1 or Kog-1 has the G1 google theme, company brand name and inference to a cog. So part of a greater machine or small tool and I guess the loading/search screen can have rotating cog, sorry err.... kog logo

3G HSDPA this day and age is the normal. Biggest complaint I have had from customers is design and usefulness. The other is portability and these customer are office users not road warriors like myself.
At end of day most conditions must be met and that is why the iPhone has been so successful. Reasonable battery life, user interface etc
I just need a phone that can access anywhere for my email and (hopefully) future applications.. oh did I mention battery life :)

GPS??? Are you really believing what you read in the paper?
c'mon mate.... Kogan will bring this phone out, then say you can use google maps via the web like the first iphone, he probably already has these on the way.
@ lottos.com.au
I saw that link as well and made some inquiries re large order cost, to be fair, Kogan puts a respectable margin on these goods and is by no means over charging like I think he is doing for the larger lcd tvs. (esp the old 46" model that was garbage)
The only real question/fear I have is if i buy one of these units, do I really know if it has passed all the radiation emitting guidelines, like a phone unlike a TV can adversely affect your health...
What sort of safety testing will be done on this phone and who will regulate it? I dont want my ear to melt of and or a battery explode!!

Hey mate i'm just saying what has been reported. I hope Kogan doesn't believe they can convince us that that crap with the first iPhone is gps. I guess we will all just have to wait and see.
Also I thought they need to get approval to sell the phone here to ensure it is safe. Not that I know.

Your right, I also hope they do not do this.
A $199 phone that has GPS, Android and wifi would instantly be a hit!
However, Kogan's current GPS is &249, if this phone has GPS hardware inside of it, Kogan would be cannibalizing his own products... who would buy that is you could get a gps and million other features for $50 bucks less?
I am still 100% sure that this is the phone he will be bringing out!
Further more, I am sure there will be minimal testing carried out.... eeeeeeek

One more thing.... it looks like the model I am speculating about Kogan getting, does not have 3G....... Therefore, no "semi reliable" GPS over the web, therefore waste of money!

David says...
Hmmm... I was very excited to hear this at first... but after that died down I began to wonder just how much hardware can you pack into a $199 phone? I'm guessing the hardware will be more along the lines of saaay the Motorola RAZR or Sony Ericsson k800 series but it just HAPPENS to use Android as an operating system rather than Symbian or Windows Mobile. I wouldn't be expecting full blown iPhone or HTC Dream killer at this price as even the OpenMoko project only managed to produce a phone with Ok-ish specs for USD $399.
Even though the work I do (IT stuff) demands that I have WiFi, Bluetooth, email, web, 3G, a full keyboard (not a keypad) and a phone I can install a telnet/SSH client on, I will be interested to see what Kogan can come up with. There are still alot of older people who only want a mobile for the original purpose it was intended... TO MAKE PHONE CALLS!!!! If Kogan can do that and do it well... my hat goes off to you sir!

Interesting. I suspect that for $199 we'll get a non-3g enabled Android phone without aGPS etc.
Having said that, it still could make for a bargain so long as you don't need to use it for data-heavy applications (such as those delivered over a 3G network).

I'm starting to think a name that doesn't use the word 'Kogan' or any variation thereof is probably best. If this is to sell to teenagers and everyone else, it needs a name that is catchy and marketable.
It's also not necessary to name the phone using the work 'Android' - 99% of the population don't even know what Android is.
Alternatively you could go with a more generic brand name like 'Kogan K100' or something really ordinary. Future devices could follow a similar naming convention 'Kogan K101/K200' etc. based on their type.

I'm interested - Phone reception quality has to be the main priority as any one who bought an early JasJam will attest great phone for it's time but pathetic phone reception - also 3G HDSPA and a decent screen resolution are a must - GPS would also be an advantage. It would be better if necessary to slightly increase the price to get some reasonable specs /receptiom quality - clearly at $199 it is not going to be a full spec Iphone killer but perhaps at $250 / $300 enough specs might be in it to make it very attractive.
As commented on earlier - I would probably only consider buying it if there was a report from an authoritive tester that it met all the relevant emission guidelines (though as commented on earlier this may come as default to be allowed to operate in Australia).

I really like this suggestion, you could even extend it onto other animals/creatures. And then each new phone (if/when) can follow the theme.
@aj
What is your problem? Why do you seem to have such a poor attitude, with an obvious bias against Kogan?

I had no probs with Kogan untill he decided to directly attack Harvey Norman.
Dont get me wrong, I dont have an affiliation to Harvey at all!!
BUT
It wreaked of arrogance..... and i digress...
How someone is so arrogant when they are selling OEM imports with statements in the press like,
"we have literally hundreds of manufactures we can choose from"
and
"we are just finalizing the design for......"
All in reference to this new phone he in bringing out makes me sick......
The guy is buying a few hundred str8 from alibaba and selling it with a 3c stamp of ink saying kogan added to it.....
and is arrogant???

I don't discard the possibility that Kogan will simply purchase and OEM phone - it's very likely that most Kogan products are OEM products since manufacturing and producing new/modified products is expensive, difficult and time consuming.
However, even if the Kogan Android phone is the OEM phone that 'aj' links to, so what? It's a $199 phone! At $199, nobody posting on this thread expects much more than a simple Android phone.

I'm really enjoying this banter so please don't stop, but if you're going to pass comment on other people's grasp of the English language maybe you should make sure you have yours fully grasped also. Your spelling and punctuation leaves something to be desired.
Be sure to get your "your/you're" correct in future and keep an eye on your upper vs lower case problem. Just proof read it a few times before posting it to avoid future embarrassment, because God knows that was a doozy!
Anyway keep your sooking and your waa waa waa-ing up, it passes the time as we wait for the the phone's release.
Oh yeah and I can't wait to be able write these things on an Android phone so if Kogan is the first to do it here then so be it.

Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't had the chance to be more involved here -- I have been very busy working on the Android phone! I promise I will get you details as soon as I can confirm everything.
I'm sorry you found my comments about Harvey Norman arrogant, but I just didn't agree with the way he was talking about the Australian economic situation. I didn't think his public statement was at all appropriate and I thought some people might be interested in hearing my view -- turns out they were.
In regards to the Android phone, we are certainly not buying 'a few hundred straight form alibaba'. We are working closely with manufacturers to design a new phone. I will admit that we are yet to finalise the product, but it's looking very exciting!
Also, I completely understand you being worried about the product but rest assured it will be a quality product backed up by our warranty. I'll also get it to third party media outlets as soon as possible so before it launches you can read some honest feedback about it.

aj, I gladly accept your dare!
That is not the phone we will be releasing in Australia.
Just to validate that, the phone you link to (and some others that have been suggested) is not 3G. I would never release a phone in Australia that is not 3G compatible.
Kogan Technologies is not about selling the cheapest product. We strike a balance between the best technology and the best value prices. 3G is a must!

Mate, I am going to need you to point out my 'rusty' English skills. If you can point out examples, that would be appreciated.
If you believe you are more mature than a primary school student, then perhaps you should ensure your posts reflect your maturity.
Also, my confidence levels are not based on what other people think of me, certainly not you anyway. But if you feel as though you need to show respect to me, then my all means.
I am not defensive of Kogan, I have no affiliation with the company or Ruslan at all. I just think your comments regarding this device are unjustifiably negative. The only connections I have with the company are: 1) I am Australian; and 2) I am interested in the Android OS.
@ Ruslan
Thanks for finally coming out and putting to rest the claims made by 'aj', however you did not comment on the gps.

@Ruslan - when designing your phone please consider much more than 128Mb for app storage. That is the major flaw of the G1. Google engineers are working on allowing apps to be run from the SD card but there are technical challenges with that. The simple answer is to increase the amount of primary storage. 8Gb as per an iPhone or Nokia N95 would be nice but anything greater than 128Mb is most welcome.

@C3PO: I fear you are correct. If Ruslan is indeed having this thing put together himself then we are many months away from anything 'hitting shelves' so to speak. Just think how long it takes getting a phone through the radiation exposure standards etc, etc.,
The Nokia 5800XM won't be released until next year either. These two phones are probably worth waiting for. I'll have to keep my falling-apart Nokia 6131 going until then...

Do you happen to know how long it takes to get all the required approvals? I have no idea, just curious. Maybe (and I am hoping) there is a fast tracking process?
However I don't think it took an exceptionally long time for the G1 to get approval (maybe a month). Do you think the US and Oz would be similar in testing times?

Question to fellow posters:
Would you prefer a lower internal memory (128MB) with MicroSDHC support (G1) or a large fixed internal storage (4GB) without MicroSDHC support (HTC Touch Diamond)?
Also what should the minimum ROM size be? I have a HTC Touch (Elf) which has 64MB ROM, which in my opinion is way to small for the things I want my phone to do.

Memory - RAM 192 MB RAM Memory - ROM 256 MB ROM Memory Slot MicroSD (Max 16GB) Battery 1500 mAh A must for phone to be successful.
More RAM will lead to more application and they running all the time so more battery is a must.
Can any one clarify the price tags say $199 is it Australia or US Dollar? Double minded (US as it explicitly does not says AUD or Australia as Kogan is a Australia company and selling it there)

@ Pawan
I presumed it was Australian. If it was US then the papers should have indicated this in their articles. Plus as this is an Australian URL I thought it was pretty safe to presume the prices are relevant for Australia.

my current phone Asus P320 with 64MB RAM and 128 MB ROM is just too low for me and way too slow.

Despite a $199 price tag, I'd like to see the following features as a priority: * Screen res > 320x240 (320x240 is much too small for a full touch-screen device) * Capactive-type screen (not resistive) * aGPS * WiFi (absolute MUST HAVE imo)
Less-important features: * Camera/video functionality
I think this is definitely achievable since phones like the Blackberry Bold have a shipped cost of < AUD$240, and they include every possible feature under the sun!
As I understand one of the big expenses in building devices like these is memory and CPU. If the phone is to have good camera/video/media functionality it needs a decent CPU and that means higher price.

In my opinion it would seem almost ridiculous to release a phone these days without an inbuilt camera and some media functionality. Even phones with 2MP camera's are generally considered to be 'low spec'. I generally agree with everything else you said though.

As you can understand I don't want to talk about particulars until we finalise it, but aj P, as I've already stated -- the phone will be 3G compatible.
Macca, where did you see the Bold for less than $240? I'd be very interested to take a look. I believe it is that cheap, but only if you're stuck to a 12-24 month plan. The Kogan phone on the other hand will not be locked to any plan or network, which is a very significant difference. I think if you try to purchase the Bold outright it comes to a significantly higher cost.
Cheers,
Ruslan

What can I say that has not been said? I'll reiterate my deal breaking list: Touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, expansion card slot SDHC preferred, camera, as much RAM as G1/iPhone, actual keyboard or onscreen keyboard (so take your pick, either design new keyboard hardware or software hah). Make it nice looking, glossy or rough, the case design should be immaculate.
My would be nice list: Clicking touchscreen.
Names: KoToGo (or Kotogo), K1, K3G the “keg”, “the Android phone that is $200AU” (ok maybe not that name).
I found Kogan Technologies specifically searching for the next Android phone, and really couldn't ask for anything better than what you are offering price wise. As you are most likely aware, if you release this phone onto the WORLD market, you will dominate it. Period. Demand will be so high, that I doubt you will be able to make them fast enough! Please ship internationally, please?
