OFF TO CHINA

As I mentioned earlier I regularly travel to China to check out new technology.

Just letting you know I'll be heading off tomorrow. I'll be checking out a couple of potential new products while I'm there:

  • An all-in-one slimline box that has a built in DVD player, digital tuner, HDMI output, USB and SD memory card playback (for AVI, DivX, and JPG)
  • Sunglasses with built in bluetooth and mp3 player

What do you think of these? I think the first will be great. It'll bring the functionality of the PRO range to any TV, Kogan or otherwise. It'll also be the first of its kind in Australia as far as I can see. It should take away the need for having devices and cables all over the place. Neatness is always good!

As for the sunnies, they're just something I've always wanted. I'll see if I can get photos of this new one. Would you be interested in either of these products?

Sounds good - add an integrated hard disc for recording to that, and it would be the "dream machine" :-)

New Ideas says...

Kogan,

  1. Offer a range of Wall Brackets for the largest of your TV Sets ie above 40, 42 and 46 Inch models
  2. Sell HDMI cables

Note: A range of Plasma TV for the larger sizes due to potential loss of picture quality on angles...see http://www.digitalinstalls.com.au/lcdvsplasma.html for my reasoning

Have a safe trip

I'll join Jono B with a desire to have a PVR - tuner, hard disk and DVD recorder (not just a player).

David M says...

Add 2 digital tuners + 500Gb HDD and I'll buy one !

Phil Bramley says...

Add maps of other countries to your FIO GPS range...runs Navteq software so can't see why this wont work?

Doug Parsons says...

The all-in-one media player has been slowly evolving thanks to a single chip solution board. The latest and greatest is Popcorn Hour, which has all the featured mentioned above and then some. You can add a hard drive as well.

I suspect the slimline box mentioned above is simply the same board + chip solution with a different wrapper. Vendors differentiate themselves by the software and look of the box, but the core features are identical. The trick to buying the right one is support - how much effort can/will the manufacturer put into updates and upgrades as bug fixes and new features are asked for. And you can't apply one box's patches to another's, either. Caveat emptor.

Re the bluetooth sunnies, as they ave been around for a while now, I never bothered with them as they were too bulky, - but if you can get them down in zie , not too big along the sides where the guts of the blurtooth device is located, then you are on a winner.

John MC says...

Make sure the tuner is HD. A BLU-RAY burner too would be good. Check out the Digitilstar.com.au current special item as an example of what can be built for about $900. Less than that and its a deal!

Most of my ideas have already been written down...

Keep up the great quality and the low prices and ill defiantly be coming back for a lot more products.

Jason says...

I think you should sell a 50 inch or 60 inch range of plasma or LCD's as i am looking for a 50 inch one at the moment in 1080 but currently you have none and soon will purchase from another store but LG brand. Would purchase from you, so take this into consideration.

Geoff says...

When are you getting the LCD DVD combos in larger sizes

say 81cm and larger.

Grant says...

Things I am interested in:

  • 32" LCD with built in DVD player
  • DVD/HDD recorder with HD DVB-T
  • Media player that connect to a LAN and stream from a PC - with HDMI output...
  • a device that combines the 2 above ;)

Any chance of any of these?

What about those glasses with the earphones that you plug into any DVD player for a cinematic experience?

They are horribly expensive...but also of more interest than the mp3/bluetooth - in my opinion.
